Community Outreach

When you purchase hearing aids from Northeast Hearing & Speech, you’re directly contributing to the work we do in our community. Thanks to your support and the generosity of our community partners, 95% of the trainings we do are free and we provide them for hundreds of people every year.
Through these programs, we’re able to:
- Expand teachers' and families’ understanding of how they can support early language and literacy in the classroom and at home.
- Support the United Way's "Goal 1: Early Learning" that helps prepare children for kindergarten and engage in literacy-promoting experiences.
- Provide free or low-cost hearing screenings for children at places like Headstart, schools, community programs, and businesses throughout Greater Portland.
- Offer hearing clinics and workshops in eligible retirement communities.
In 2020, our partnership with United Way of Greater Portland and its Thrive 2027 initiative included:
- Screening 1361 children for developmental concerns and referring 625 of them for services.
- Providing professional development training for 310 people, with 97.7% of them reporting that they learned new strategies to use with children in their care.
- Treating 235 children to support development of language, math and reading skills, with 94% making progress in at least one area of speech-language development.
Services
Community Based Speech Language Screenings
Early identification of speech-language difficulties has a tremendous impact on a child’s success in school. Our community outreach team provides free or low cost speech language screenings for children ages 2-5 in early care and education settings throughout Greater Portland. Priority is given to programs that have families receiving some type of federal or state subsidy. For more information please contact: [email protected].
Community Based Hearing Screenings
Even a mild hearing loss can affect a child’s development and academic success. Northeast provides free or low cost hearing screenings in a variety of settings throughout Greater Portland including Headstart, schools, community programs, and businesses. Workshops for Parents, Teachers, and Early Childhood Educators
Northeast Hearing & Speech is proud to offer a variety of workshops for early childhood educators, teachers, early intervention specialists, and parents in community settings such as preschools, libraries, schools, and in our clinic.
